Are you spending Easter in Oslo?

This week the capital of Norway, Oslo, offers everything from a heavy metal festival to children’s activities at the museums. And the skiing conditions are perfect even though the sun is shining, which we are very happy about.

Open museums with activities for children

Many of Oslo’s museums are open every day this Easter; check the list of opening hours for Oslo museums for Easter 2013. Some of the museums, including the Museum of Science & Technology and the Norwegian Museum of Cultural History, offer special Easter activities for children.

How about Inferno Metal Festival?

Over 40 bands will be performing at the Inferno Metal Festival this year. The event kicks off with a club night on Wednsesday 27 March with concerts at several venues, and continues for three more nights at John DEE and Rockefeller Concert Hall.

Hop on-hop off mini cruise

This tour on an old sailing ship in the inner Oslo Fjord is available every day between 9.45 am and 3.30 pm. Mini Cruise hop on-hop off has four daily departures between City Hall, the Opera House and the museums at Bygdøy. You can use your Oslo pass and you first start the ride at Aker Brygge peer nr.3

For those who would like a last taste of winter before the season ends, Oslo Winter Park is open every day this Easter between 10 am and 5 pm. An other option is to go cross country around Maridals vannet. Fantastic place that you will love.

Opera House Oslo – Guided tours and free concerts

The Opera House is offering guided tours in English every day this Easter. Go behind the scenes at this architectural masterpiece!
The Norwegian Opera and Ballet is also hosting free concerts this Easter. The shop will be open, and children can will enjoy the activity table set up just for them.

Vålerenga Oslos pride – Football game

On Monday 1 April 2012, Vålerenga Football are playing their first home game of the Tippeliga 2013, against Sogndal. Tickets are available at billettservice.no and at Ullevaal Stadium before the game.

Everyone I know who’s visited Oslo has told me it’s boring.

Bjorn, my Olso guide, doesn’t agree. “But,” he concedes, “parts of Oslo are becoming ugly.”

We’re standing on the roof of the Oslo Opera House, which only opened in 2008 but is already among the city’s most iconic structures. A practicing architect himself, Bjorn is mostly complimentary of the opera house, although he believes the decision to build it out of white Italian marble (which is now yellow) instead of grey Norwegian granite was a mistake.

He points toward the northeast. “Those buildings you see right there are known as the ‘Barcode,’ what with how tall and thin they are. They were designed so as to only minimally obstruct the scenery around them — the idea is that you can see through the bars.”

The Sea, The Green and The City Between

The problem with this well-intentioned idea is that it is only applicable if you’re looking at the buildings straight on.

“The original concept of Oslo was simple,’ Bjorn explains. “The sea, the green and the city between. Only now, thanks to our new Manhattan project, you can’t see the sea from the green, or the green from the sea — it’s only city now.”

He directs my attention south, where another new construction project is rapidly rising. “This is the first phase of a project the government has dubbed the ‘Fjord City,’ which they eventually want to extend around the entire Oslo bay.
